There are several passages in the Book Of Mormom(BOM) which contradicts the notion that the BOM people migrated to Mesoamerica and established their civilization in the Yucatan or Chili or Peru areas. Unfortunately, the present –day controversies stemmed from John Taylor who was editor of the Times and seasons newspaper in September 1842 and had made several suggestions about the geography of the BOM that has caused a great deal of controversy. It was Fredrick G. Williams who allegedly received a revelation for “Joseph the Seer” regarding the BOM geography. This so-called revelation was already questionable because Brother Williams was not a Seer called to receive revelations. It was Joseph Smith . who was called as the Prophet and Seer of these Latter Days. That revelation came into the hands of the Church Historian twenty years after Joseph Smith was martyred and caused the initial controversy. Orson Pratt, an apostle in the Church was said to have been the one who kept the controversy alive. In the 1897 edition of the BOM, Orson suggested in the footnotes that Lehi landed on the coast of Chile, that the Isthmus of Darien was the narrow neck of land, the River Magdalena in Columbia was the River Sidon and Zarahemla was on the Yucatan Peninsula. Many believed the suggestions of Orson Pratt, because they were in the BOM. Others could not believe because they were so illogical and contrary to what is in the BOM. It is interesting to note that as each upcoming generation study the geographical theories of those who have gone before find that nothing has been proven; yet some set out to prove that the people of the BOM did indeed live in Mesoamerica. One such individual was Thomas Ferguson. His greatest love was trying to prove that the BOM was TRUE through the study of archaeology in Mesoamerica. He was so sure that he could prove the truthfulness of the BOM within ten years by locating sites and dates in Mesoamerica that he convinced President Mckay of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to sponsor his search to the tune $250,000. At the end of his 10 year search, He wrote a 29 page report in which he concluded “that what is the ground will never conform to what is in the BOM.” This report can be obtained for reading in the Church Achives of the Church Office Buiding in Salt Lake City, Utah.
In my next submission, I will identify the passages which support my opinion that Nephi's people came to the Promised Land which is known as the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
